Iquitos is the main fluvial port in the Amazon River and the largest city in the Peruvian jungle. In Iquitos one can visit, among many places, the Iron House, which was designed by the famous French architect Gustave Eiffel.
In contrast to this house, the rustic suburban houses in Belen rest on rafts and stilts to be protected from the freshet of the river. One of the greatest attractions is sailing along the rivers and on the lakes as well as enjoying the beautiful beaches.
The National Reserve of Pacaya-Samiria ( 2 080.000 ha ), the largest in in the country, is located 183 km away from the city and is a haven for numerous animal and plant species, many of which are in danger of extinction.
Population: 261,648
inhabitants.
Altitude: 104 m.a.s.l.
Climate: The city of Iquitos has a warm and rainy climate year round. The highest average annual temperature is 31°C ( 88ºF ) and the lowest annual is 21°C ( 70ºF ). The low flow season (July - November) and the freshet (December - July) present unique differences in fauna, flora and weather. |
