Puerto Maldonado is a destination not to be missed, it is the way to one of the natural reserves with the largest biodiversity in the world: Manu; also the department hosts the Tambopata National Park.

The Manu National Park ( 1 716.295 ha ), located in the departments of Cuzco and Madre de Dios, is the home of over 800 bird species, 200 species of mammals, gigantic trees as well as native communities. This Park currently holds the record of bird spotting in one day and in one single place, with 324 species.

The Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve ( 274.690 ha ) is known for being the home the largest diversity of species of mammals, trees, insects and birds in the world and holds the world record of number of butterflies species.

Climate: The city of Puerto Maldonado has a warm and humid climate.The highest average annual temperature is 26°C ( 77 ºF ) and the lowest is 8°C ( 24 ºF ). The rain season is from December to March.
